She has represented a broad spectrum of clients at various tribunals and all levels of court in British Columbia. Anita is a skilled mediator, having received her training at the Harvard Negotiation Institute. She is on Mediate B.C.’s Associate Civil Roster. Anita is also a Chartered Professional in Human Resource (CPHR) and completed training in workplace investigations from the Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources at the University of Toronto.

In 2022, after 15 years in private practice, Anita followed her heart and opened Anita Atwal Law. Anita is well known for giving the “straight goods” to clients and colleagues. She is a go-to problem solver. Anita provides advice that is practical, well-reasoned and places client needs at the center of every decision.

Anita grew up in a farming family in the Lower Mainland and as a young adult was quickly introduced to the ins and outs of running a successful business. She also learned the value of hard work and resilience early in life. After learning those skills, Anita headed off to law school and started her legal career in 2006 at a large regional firm in Vancouver, where she had a broad civil litigation practice servicing clients in local government, labour and employment, insurance, and commercial litigation. In 2017, she joined a boutique labour, employment and human rights firm where she focused exclusively on workplace law.  From these experiences, Anita developed a collaborative style of practice that is focused on finding creative solutions and providing exceptional client service.

In 2023, Anita served as the Principal Consultant (Interim Director) of Human Rights at Simon Fraser University (SFU).

Anita is active in the legal community and is a firm believer in access to justice. She was a supervising lawyer with the Everyone Legal Clinic, an Access Pro Bono Initiative. She also served as the Co-Chair of the Canadian Bar Association of BC (CBABC) Workplace Investigations Subsection. Anita is also the longest serving former President and Director of the South Asian Bar Association of B.C.

In 2024, the Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch, recognized Anita for her efforts in advancing equality by awarding her the Equality and Diversity Award. She was also awarded the Surrey Board of Trade’s Woman in Business Award in 2024.

In addition, Anita serves on the Board of Directors of British Columbia Infrastructure Benefits (BCIB), a Provincial Crown Corporation responsible for providing qualified skilled trades for the construction of public infrastructure projects. She also chairs BCIB’s HR & Governance Committee.

Anita is frequently invited to present and provide training on a variety of topics related to workplace law, mediations and equity, diversity and inclusions.

Anita is fluent in Punjabi and provides services in Punjabi when requested by clients and/or legal counsel.

In her spare time, you will find Anita on the sidelines of a football field and/or hockey rink, cheering on her kids. As an avid Seahawks fan, you may even catch her at a tail gate during the NFL season.
